Have your air ducts professionally cleaned

If you want to have clean air ducts, the most obvious first step is to have them professionally cleaned! This will allow you to work with a blank slate as you implement some of the other habits we’ve listed here.

A responsible air duct cleaning service will use this opportunity to assess how your HVAC system is functioning. If our team sees any problems with the filters, cooling or heating coils, fan, or other components, we’ll recommend fixes that will improve the functionality of your HVAC system.

Regularly change your air filters

Your HVAC system is only as good as your filter, so make sure to change it out regularly. The rule of thumb is somewhere between every 30 to 90 days. This is especially true if you have pets or your external air quality has been impacted by smog or fires.
We would say, it’s a good idea to inspect your HVAC filter once per month. You’re looking for visible signs of clogging. If, for instance, you can’t see through the filter when you hold it up to the light, it’s probably a good idea to replace it. When you do replace your filter, use the highest quality you can afford on your budget. Low quality filters may be cheaper in the short-term, but they’ll likely require more frequent changing.

Keep on top of regular household cleaning

Unfortunately, an HVAC system can’t eliminate the dust in your home. That needs to be done with regular dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, and emptying of the lint trap in your dryer.

Even a few minutes of cleaning a day can make a big improvement on your overall air quality.

Fix any leaks or plumbing issues in your home

One of the risks of a clogged air duct is mold growth. So, while you’re doing everything to keep your air ducts clean, pay attention also to potential sources of humidity and standing water.

A leaky faucet or an old window that doesn’t shut all the way can lead to larger problems with your HVAC system.

Lower your risk of vermin entering your HVAC system

Outdoor vent covers are an important line of defense for your HVAC system. That’s because they keep out animals, like birds and mice, that want to nest in your air ducts.

Every once in a while, you’ll want to check on these vent covers and make sure they’re not covered, damaged, or clogged.

Manage the pet impact

We all love our pets, but there’s no question that their dander and in the case of cats, dusty litter boxes, lower our indoor air quality. Luckily, there are a few easy fixes:
When you groom Fido, do it outside. Or, better yet, treat your pup to a spa day at the groomer’s.

For litter boxes, consider a covered box that will trap dust when your cat uses it. If your feline friend is open to it, swapping out a dusty litter for an alternative like pellets or wood shavings can also cut down on particles in the air.

You can keep your air ducts clean longer!
